Both light up your sign after dark — the difference is where the light comes from, and what that means for cost and look.
Frontlit
lit from external spotlights or floodlights aimed at the sign face. Full-colour print or cut vinyl on an aluminium composite or acrylic face. The more budget-friendly option of the two.
Backlit
lit from LED modules built inside the sign box, glowing evenly through a translucent face. A more even, all-over glow, at a higher cost than frontlit.

Frontlit signage is the more budget-friendly of the two — it uses external spotlights rather than internal LED modules built into the sign box, which is what adds to backlit signage's cost. If budget is the main driver and you just need the sign visible after dark, frontlit is usually the better fit.
